Master’s Thesis Defense of João Manco in Biochemistry

Updated: Dec 2

On November 26, 2025, João Manco successfully defended his Master’s thesis in Biochemistry at the NOVA school of Science and Technology. His research project, titled “Interplay of ageing and metabolism: impact on osteogenic differentiation,” explored how age-related metabolic changes influence the biological mechanisms underlying osteogenic differentiation.

The study provided valuable insights into the interplay between ageing, metabolic regulation, and osteoinductive mechanisms, contributing to the optimization of biomaterials for regenerative medicine applications, particularly in ageing populations.

The work was supervised by Cláudia Deus, who also served as a member of the examination committee, supporting the scientific development of the project and contributing to the evaluation of the final defense.

The thesis was supervised by Cláudia Deus, who also served on the examination committee, together with Dr. Margarida Braga and Zélia Silva. Their evaluation highlighted the scientific relevance of the work and the quality of João’s presentation.

João demonstrated strong scientific rigor, critical thinking, and a clear understanding of the impact of his findings. His defense was well received by the committee, marking an important milestone in his academic path.
